We did it. Wild Rumpus and her crew sailed from Cape City to Grenada with stops in St Helena and Fernando de Noronha. We survived with out bodily harm, some bruises to our ego, some damaged boat elements, one stabbed dinghy, and an extra of Ostrich sausage that no one might convey themselves to eat, and all of us remained mates (or the crew was about to mutiny and we landed simply in time for my security). That is the tremendous temporary recap.

I’ve been dwelling for about 28 hours and thought I’d begin sharing some photos and provides some perception into our journey, which was deliberate for years and took months to finish. I’m hopeful the writing course of will assist me arrange the journey, which is now only a large mishmash of recollections in no specific order.

With the good thing about hindsight, I’ll do my finest to offer an sincere recap of the complete journey and my ideas on what I’d do otherwise subsequent time. For now, suffice it to say that we made it, and the journey was nice.

Leg 1- Cape City to St Helena

We departed within the late afternoon on July 14. The climate prediction was for cloudy climate with 14-16 foot seas. The crew for this leg included Stacey, Eric, Dinna, Bernard, Jay, and Nik (Nik is an Xquisite worker they despatched alongside since our shakedown was an ocean crossing.)

Our night departure from Cape City.
A beautiful view from the helm.

Irrespective of how massive the ocean, an image or video at all times makes it seem calm.

Ho hum- just a few extra ocean crusing.
Dinna and Nik hauling in a fish. Dinna was the scourge of the seas- hauling in three nice fish out. Given she solely had 4 alternatives to fish- her document is spectacular.
After arriving at St Helena, a small ferry picked us up on the boat and introduced us to the island. The one manner on the island is to attend for the swell to lift the ferry close to the ropes, seize one, and leap!

Leg 2- St. Helena to Fernando de Noronha

We stated goodbye to Nik on St. Helena and departed for Fernando de Noronha. Total, this was a relaxed sail with good winds and comparatively average seas.

St Helena will be seen within the distance behind us.

99% of standing watch is rather like this.
Off-watch crew establishing for a film.
Dawn and sundown on the ocean will be fairly spectacular.
We arrived at Fernando de Noronha and anchored in one of many solely anchorages within the space. I’ve by no means seen extra turtles or dolphins in a single place. They’re strictly protected with fixed enforcement by the native police. Consequently, the turtles and dolphins go about their days and don’t trouble to keep away from people in any respect. In actual fact, the legislation is that people should keep away from turtles and dolphins to the purpose of getting out of the water if needed. That’s Wild Rumpus within the distance.

Our go to to Fernando was beautiful. We left Jay there to make his manner again to the U.S. by way of Recife, Brazil. We had been additionally fortunate sufficient to re-meet Matt and Amy of Crusing Florence. We met them briefly at St. Helena and so they ended up anchoring subsequent to us for a couple of days.

Leg 3- Fernando de Noronha to Grenada

For the ultimate leg we had been all the way down to Stacey, Eric, Dinna, Bernard, and me.

Fernando de Noronha behind us.
Dinna made unbelievable cinnamon rolls (recipe courtesy of Lisa Alspach) whereas underway.

Though photos and movies don’t precisely depict the ocean state, this one taken from the cockpit close to the strict provides some perspective. Watch the entrance windshield. Whenever you don’t see water, we’re climbing up a wave; while you do, we’re racing down the opposite facet.

We crossed the equator and had slightly ceremony to rejoice.
On an excellent calm day we ignored our PFDs and took a bunch shot on the bow. (Bernard was on watch and thus required to put on his PFD.)
Extra carnage, this time by Dinna and Eric working as a workforce.
Approaching Grenada

Present Standing

I’m again in California, slowly acclimating to land life and focusing extra on work. Stacey and Eric now reside on the boat and are onerous at work fixing what we broke. Dinna and Bernard are off for extra adventures.

Extra writings to comply with together with new adventures.
